Shimmering Peaks

Shimmering Peaks

Bitter wind swept across the deep blue-green ice of Shanator Glacier, high in the Shimmering Peaks of Iferra, sending stinging ice crystals into the eyes of Talis Balithor. The Peaks were treacherous at any time of year. Only the brave or the foolhardy would dare venture there in the long winter months, full of chill days and colder nights. Tal fell somewhere between those two extremes, an experienced explorer with an unfortunate passion for risk. Eyeing the heavy gray clouds bearing down from the north, Tal now questioned the wisdom of braving the mountains so late in the year. Still, the promise of the prize he sought quickly allayed those concerns. Shaking the flecks of ice and snow from his eyes, he swung his ice axe into the glacier face above. A brief crack followed the blow as the blade bit into the rock hard ice. He tugged on the axe, ensuring that his blow had struck true. Finding the grip sound, he continued to climb up the face of the enormous ice sheet, passing the time musing upon the object of his quest. From childhood, Tal had heard the tale of a great battle upon this very glacier, long, long ago. A mighty sorcerer, traveling the Peaks in search of the scales of an ice wyrm, stumbled unexpectedly upon the beast he sought. According to legend, the great mage spoke to the dragon, asking if she might accept anything in exchange for a few of her scales. The fell creature gazed down upon the frail fur-clad figure, her green eyes narrowing in contemplation
